The river is the matrix of the city of Bath and defines its geography. Somewhere between history and modernity, the footbridge is a symbol of this attention to geography, to the qualities of its surroundings, and to the presence of its built history.
The structure adapts to the direction of mechanical forces just as it supports the footsteps of pedestrians: it is delicate, efficient and variable. The steel structure varies, and its narrowness expresses a desire for a form of frugality. The plane curves of the promenade support variations in the static behaviour of the bridge in elevation. Its geometry serves a connection between the way the bridge has been executed and the delicate way it occupies the riverscape.
