The new footbridge and cycle bridge in the European quarter of the Kirchberg Plateau crosses a state forest and connects a rapidly developing district to the Modern Art Museum of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. These two aspects are the founding principles of our project: first the forest, which we want to think of as being very precious, like a green treasure in the heart of the city; and second, the museum that lies at the core of cultural and artistic life in the city. The project provides a sense of coherence between these two special parameters and ensure that a functional object—the bridge—is transcended by the situation in which it is located.
This attention to the site is expressed in two decisive ways: the bridge is positioned so as to protect all the existing trees with no sense of hierarchy, as if to demonstrate care for its setting and a highly respectful attitude towards what was already there before we intervened; and the choice of a reflective structure that almost dematerialises the bridge—or rather materialises it through reflection. The way the bridge is perceived changes according to the viewer’s position and angle of vision as well as the changing light and seasons.
